Dayton's German heritage comes alive every August with Germanfest Picnic, a beloved annual celebration featuring authentic German food, live music, beer, and family fun. If you are looking for a great weekend in the Miami Valley, this is one of the best events of the summer.

What Is Germanfest?

Germanfest celebrates Dayton's deep German roots with a multi-day festival featuring authentic German cuisine, live entertainment, dancing, beer, and cultural activities. It is hosted by the Dayton Liederkranz Turner, one of the city's most historic German cultural organizations. Now in its 42nd year, Germanfest is one of Dayton's signature summer events and draws visitors from across the region. From the moment you walk through the gates, the sounds of polka music, the aroma of bratwurst on the grill, and the sight of families and friends gathered around picnic tables tell you this is something special.

When and Where

Germanfest Picnic takes place in early to mid-August at the Dayton Liederkranz Turner Clubhouse, located at 1400 E. Fifth Street in the Historic St. Anne's Hill neighborhood of Dayton. The festival typically runs from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. Hours are usually Friday 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Saturday 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and Sunday 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the traditional Polka Mass held Sunday morning at 10:00 AM. The best part? Food

Let us be honest, the food is the star of Germanfest. And it delivers. The menu is a celebration of classic German cuisine prepared with tradition and care. You will find:

• Bratwurst, schnitzel, and authentic German sausages
• German potato salad and sauerkraut done right
• Fresh-baked pretzels big enough to share
• Strudel and authentic German pastries and desserts

Food service hours are staggered throughout the weekend, so check the schedule. The bratwurst alone is worth the trip, but save room for dessert. The pastry table is not something you want to skip.

Entertainment

The entertainment lineup at Germanfest is always packed. Live bands take the stage throughout the weekend, including acts like The Klaberheads, Überland Band, Aaron Dussing Band, Band 5, The Fries Band, and Mary's Turbo Accordions. You will hear everything from traditional German polka and waltzes to modern takes on classic folk music.

The Cincinnati Enzian German Dancers perform traditional dances in authentic costume. Saturday afternoon features the German Fashion Show (Deutsches Trachtenschau) showcasing traditional German attire. And the Sunday morning Polka Mass is a unique cultural experience you will not find anywhere else in Dayton. From magic shows and kids activities to the German car show, there is always something happening.

Drinks

Germanfest brings an impressive selection of German beers. You will find draft offerings from Ayinger, Warsteiner, and Hofbräu, including seasonal Oktoberfest brews. There is also a full selection of wine and cocktails, plus non-alcoholic refreshments for all ages. Prost!

Tips for Going

A few things I have picked up from past years. Check the website for exact dates and hours before you go. Arrive early for the best food selection, especially if you have your heart set on a particular dish. Bring cash for some of the vendors. Wear comfortable shoes, you will be on your feet walking between the food tents, music stage, and vendors. And since this is an outdoor event in Ohio in August, check the weather and plan accordingly. Sunscreen and a light jacket are both good ideas.
