September in Dayton.

We are in the heart of summer in the Dayton area, and the next six weeks are packed with festivals, concerts, food events, and community celebrations from Xenia to Vandalia and everywhere in between. I have been tracking the calendar and there is more happening between now and the end of September than I have seen in years.

Here is your guide to what is coming up across the greater Dayton area, including a few new restaurant openings that you may not have heard about yet.

Mid-August Highlights: August 14-16 Weekend

The third weekend of August is one of the busiest of the year. Here is what is on the calendar.

Germanfest Picnic (August 14-16)

The Germanfest Picnic returns for its annual three-day celebration of Miami Valley German heritage. Authentic German food, live music, dancing, and cultural exhibits make this one of Dayton's most cherished ethnic festivals. It takes place the second full weekend of August and draws families from across the region who come for the schnitzel, the beer, and the community atmosphere.

Xenia Food Truck Rally (August 14)

Downtown Xenia is hosting a Food Truck Rally on August 14 from 5 to 9 PM. With the Xenia Market District redevelopment underway, this is a great time to see what downtown Xenia has to offer and enjoy food trucks from across the Miami Valley. The energy in Xenia right now is real and this event is a good way to experience it.

Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival (August 15-16)

The 44th Annual Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival is one of the largest community festivals in Greene County. Over 180 arts and crafts booths, fresh sweet corn, BBQ chicken, pork chop sandwiches, live entertainment, and children's activities. Free admission and parking. If you have not been, this is the year to go.

Dayton African American Cultural Festival (August 15-16)

Island MetroPark hosts the two-day Dayton African American Cultural Festival on August 15-16. Live music, art exhibits, storytelling, dance performances, soul food, and a marketplace of Black-owned businesses. A vibrant, family-friendly event that highlights the cultural richness of the Dayton community.

Taco & Nacho Fest (August 15)

If you love tacos and nachos, this festival in Dayton is for you. All the tacos and nachos you can eat, plus live music, craft vendors, and a festive atmosphere. A great foodie event for anyone who enjoys bold flavors and a good time.

Artful Adventure Day in Vandalia (August 15)

Vandalia is hosting Artful Adventure Day on August 15 from 10 AM to 2 PM. A free family art event with hands-on activities, local artists showcasing their work, and creative fun for all ages. A nice option for families looking for something different on a Saturday.

Late August: Music, Cars, and Art

VetFest Ohio Block Party (August 22, Fairborn)

Fairborn hosts the VetFest Ohio Block Party on August 22, a community event honoring veterans with live music, food vendors, and family activities. Fairborn has been building a strong community event calendar, and VetFest is an important part of that.

41st Annual Trans Am Nationals (August 28-30, Fairborn)

One of the largest Trans Am and Pontiac car shows in the country rolls into Fairborn for the 41st year. Hundreds of classic cars, car enthusiasts from across the Midwest, and a show that has become a Fairborn institution. If you are a car person, this is a must-see.

ARTFest on Main (August 29, Springboro)

Springboro's premier juried fine arts festival returns to historic Main Street on August 29. Local and regional artists showcase paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and jewelry. Live music and food vendors complete the experience. A sophisticated addition to the late-summer calendar.

September: Festivals, Oktoberfests, and Fall Begins

September in the Dayton area is festival season at its peak. Here is what I am looking forward to.

Ohio Is For Lovers Festival (September 4, Rose Music Center)

The Rose Music Center in Huber Heights hosts the Ohio Is For Lovers Festival on September 4, featuring Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, and Saves the Day. If you grew up on emo and pop-punk, this lineup was made for you. A great way to close out the outdoor concert season.

Tippapalooza Music Festival (September 5, Tipp City)

Tipp City's annual music festival returns on September 5. Live bands, food vendors, craft beer, and family activities in downtown Tipp City. Tippapalooza has grown every year and has become a signature event for northern Montgomery and southern Miami counties.

Dayton Greek Festival (September 11-13)

The 67th Annual Dayton Greek Festival takes place September 11-13 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Belmonte Park North. Authentic Greek cuisine, fresh pastries, live music, and traditional dancing. Admission is $5 and covers the entire weekend. One of Dayton's most beloved cultural festivals.

Vandalia Oktoberfest (September 11-12)

Vandalia's Oktoberfest runs September 11-12 with German food, beer, live music, and community activities. A family-friendly celebration that has become a highlight of the Vandalia calendar.

Taste of the Oregon District (September 12)

Sample dishes from Oregon District restaurants, enjoy live entertainment, and experience Dayton's most historic entertainment district. The Taste of the Oregon District is one of the best food events in the city and a chance to explore the neighborhood's diverse dining scene.

Dayton Art Institute Oktoberfest (September 25-27)

Southwest Ohio's longest-running Oktoberfest returns to the Dayton Art Institute grounds September 25-27. Established in 1971, this festival combines art, German food, beer, live music, and family activities in one of the most beautiful settings in the region. A can't-miss event to close out September.

Hispanic Heritage Festival (September 19)

Dayton's Hispanic Heritage Festival celebrates the culture, music, dance, and cuisine of the Hispanic community. Live performances, authentic food, and family activities make this a vibrant and welcoming event for everyone.

New Restaurants You May Have Missed

Beyond the events, several new restaurants have opened recently that are worth knowing about.

GoChop African Street Food (Centerville)

Celebrated its grand opening on July 11 at 465 Miamisburg Centerville Road. Dayton's first African street food concept brings jollof rice, suya skewers, and fried plantains to the south suburbs. A welcome addition to Centerville's diverse dining scene.

The 8 (Downtown Dayton)

Opened in July 2026 near Day Air Ballpark, The 8 is a sports bar from the Gulzar family that gives downtown a much-needed pregame and postgame destination. Steps from the ballpark with a full menu and sports-bar atmosphere.

Halal Burgers (Brown Street, near UD)

Halal Burgers opened in July 2026 in the former Smashburger space on Brown Street, serving halal-certified burgers, chicken sandwiches, and sides. A needed addition for the University of Dayton neighborhood.

Desi Diner (Fairborn)

Opened at 60 S. Broad Street in March 2026, Desi Diner is an Indian-American restaurant concept that has quickly become a favorite for the Wright-Patterson community. A fresh dining option in Fairborn's growing restaurant scene.

Curry & Grill (Vandalia)

Curry & Grill is now open at 722 W. National Road in Vandalia, offering Indian cuisine with a popular luncheon buffet. A welcome addition to Vandalia's dining options on the north side of the metro area.

Why I Track What Is Happening in the Community

I have been doing real estate in this area for over 20 years, and one of the things that has always set this work apart for me is how connected it is to the community. When a new restaurant opens in Beavercreek, when Fairborn hosts its 44th Sweet Corn Festival, when the Dayton Art Institute holds its annual Oktoberfest, these are the things that make a neighborhood feel like home.

For buyers who are considering a move to the area, knowing that Xenia is investing $140 million in its downtown or that Centerville just completed a decade-long retail development tells you more about the trajectory of a community than any listing description can.
