This Week at Wright-Patterson: Mini Moos, the Great Pumpkin Palooza & a New CDC.

October's opening stretch is wrapped: the Pink Ribbon Walk filled Prairie Trace on October 1, Wright Field's 99th anniversary was marked October 2 with the Band of Flight, the Heritage of Flight Festival filled New Carlisle through October 4, and the Columbus Day holiday weekend closed out with Goal Day on October 9 and the federal holiday on October 12. This edition is fresh for October 9, 2026, and it is all about the week now arriving: Mini Moos & Brews and the Pumpkin Powder Dash land Friday, October 16, and the rest of the month is packed with the Great Pumpkin Palooza, the Zombie Chase, and Halloween on base.

There is also genuinely useful base news for families this week: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers delivered the new 41,000-square-foot Child Development Center, ready for more than 300 children, and the 88th Medical Group is running its new Siemens MAGNETOM Lumina 3T MRI, an upgrade to diagnostic imaging on the installation. In this edition: the week ahead through Halloween, the base news that matters for families, the newcomer programs I tell every incoming family to use first, and the archive of everything that has already wrapped. Past editions live in the sidebar if you are catching up.

The Week Ahead: Mini Moos & Brews, a Fun Run & the Wood Turning Class

The Force Support family lineup moves into its busiest stretch of the fall this week. Mini Moos & Brews returns Friday, October 16, 4 to 8 p.m. at Wing's Bar & Grille, an evening with the famous miniature highland cows, free cookies and swag, and the FSS's twelve-dollar moo beer flights. The Pumpkin Powder Dash fun run steps off the same evening, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jarvis Fitness Center, all paces welcome, so a family can split up, meet back, and compare notes over dinner.

For anyone who wants a regular, drop-in way to stay connected, the Afterburners Running Group meets every Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Dodge Gym. It costs nothing but a pair of shoes, and it is the fastest way I know for an incoming family to start collecting familiar faces while getting oriented on the installation. And on Tuesday, October 20, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Arts & Crafts Center runs its beginner wood turning class, $25 per person, register by calling (937) 257-7025. A hands-on evening, and an easy way to meet neighbors who share a hobby.

From Mini Moos & Brews on October 16 through Horror Nights and Troops & Treats on Halloween weekend, the base fall calendar is at its fullest.

The Rest of October: Pumpkins, a Zombie Chase & Halloween on Base

The Great Pumpkin Palooza lands Thursday, October 22, 4 to 8 p.m. at Turtle Pond: a free fall event with a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin bowling, mummy races, caricatures, a photo booth, and a DJ. It drew roughly 1,500 guests last year, and if you arrive in October, it is your one-stop evening for meeting the community. Then Friday, October 23 brings the Zombie Chase fun run, 5 to 7 p.m., a new entry on the FSS fall lineup, plus Retiree Appreciation Day at the Wright-Patt Club, a free day open to retirees, veterans, and their families connecting them with the 88th Medical Group, the Dayton VA, and DFAS. The USO Center marks National Day of the Deployed the same day with a family gathering honoring deployed service members.

On Saturday, October 24, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force hosts the Armed Services Blood Program's blood drive under the B-52, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., an easy way for military families to give back without leaving the installation. The FSS calendar shows Horror Nights Halloween Party at Wing's on Friday, October 30, and the National Museum hosts Troops & Treats on Halloween itself, Saturday, October 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., free trick-or-treating under the aircraft, a great daytime run before the neighborhood rounds that evening. Halloween season on base, the costume contests, and the pumpkin events all sit on the wrightpattfss.com calendar, so check it weekly; I keep this page current as the base confirms more dates.

Base News Worth Knowing: A New Child Development Center & a New MRI

The biggest family story on the installation this week: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District delivered a new 41,000-square-foot Child Development Center at Wright-Patterson, ready to accommodate more than 300 children. Childcare is the single most practical piece of a PCS for most families, and a project on this scale is a meaningful signal about the base's commitment to its families and its long-term growth. The base already operates four NAEYC-accredited CDCs, so if you are arriving with little ones, contact the Child & Youth Programs office early. Waitlists for infant and toddler care are real, and getting your name in early is part of the strategy I recommend.

There is also fresh medical news for families: the 88th Medical Group installed a new Siemens MAGNETOM Lumina 3T MRI, an upgrade that gives Wright-Patterson Medical Center faster, higher-resolution diagnostic imaging. For an incoming family, that means fewer referrals off base for a common piece of care, which is a practical thing to know before you arrive. And two practical reminders landed this week: October is Energy Awareness Month, and the base is posting how utility metering data drives energy decisions across the installation, a quiet nudge that this area sees real seasonal swings in utility bills, something to budget for in your first fall and winter here. The base Fire Department also reminded residents to follow fire safety when powering up devices in homes and dorms, worth a read on wpafb.af.mil before the colder months.

The longer-term items I have been tracking still stand: the $2.4 billion F-15 and F-16 engine effort with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson as the contracting activity, the AFRL reorganization and hiring surge of roughly 2,000 people expected at the base this year, Ohio's push to land the U.S. Space Force Academy, the new visiting quarters and lodging project that broke ground in June, and the Stratos aerospace hub under construction. Together they tell a long-term story: the region is investing, staff numbers are growing, and demand for housing near the gates stays strong.

For New Arrivals: The Programs to Use First

If you are still mid-PCS, here is the short list I give every incoming family, and the first two items are free and scheduled for you:

Wright Start newcomer orientation

The base runs a monthly in-person orientation for newly arrived active-duty members and their families at the Wright-Patterson Community Center (4771 Lahm Circle, Area A), covering the mission, leadership priorities, and support services on the installation, with briefings from dozens of local organizations. Spouses can attend the tailored Heart Link orientation alongside it. The base's own newcomer guide, "The PCS Cheat Code," notes Wright Start typically lands early in the month, so check the exact session date on the official newcomer site, wpafb.af.mil/Newcomers/, before you plan the rest of your week.

School Liaison Program

There are no on-base schools; kids attend Beavercreek, Fairborn, or Mad River district schools, and the School Liaison Officer is the single point of contact for enrollment and transfers. The office sits in the Military & Family Readiness Center at 2000 Allbrook Drive, Building 2, Area A, (937) 257-3592. The program actively tracks inbound families and recommends reaching out six months to a year before your report date, so it is never too early to call.

Child & Youth Programs

The new Child Development Center joins the base's four NAEYC-accredited CDCs serving children ages 6 weeks through 5 years on Areas A and B and in the Prairies, and the Prairies Youth Center offers pre-teen and teen programming. If you are arriving with kids, contact Child & Youth Programs before you land: infant and toddler slots are the most competitive, and the new CDC is the reason to ask about the waitlist as early as your orders post.

Community Center, M&FRC & the USO

The Community Center at 4771 Lahm Circle (Area A) hosts classes, workshops, and events most weekdays, including the FSS fall classes, and the Military & Family Readiness Center runs the Relocation Assistance Program with a loan closet of household basics and car seats while your shipment is in transit. The USO Wright-Patterson Center is a year-round anchor for families with Tabletop Gaming Nights, Military Spouse Coffee Connections, the Dandelion Club children's reading circle, and quarterly Deployed Family Dinners. All are natural first stops that cost nothing but an afternoon.

Housing questions

The Military Housing Office at (937) 257-6547 is the starting point, and on-base family housing is privatized and managed by The Properties at Wright Field, (937) 253-6009. Off base, Beavercreek and Fairborn are closest to the gates, 5 to 15 minutes, and I have written the full military relocation guide and a step-by-step PCS checklist covering neighborhoods, schools, and the first weeks.

Archived: The October Openers Are Wrapped

For anyone catching up: the Pink Ribbon Walk wrapped October 1 at Prairie Trace, the 99th anniversary of Wright Field was marked October 2 with the Band of Flight, the Heritage of Flight Festival filled New Carlisle through October 4, Airman Leadership School Goal Day closed most facilities October 9, and the Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day federal holiday closed the base October 12, with the base's posted gate hours holding for Gate 15A, Gate 26A, and the 24/7 Gate 12A at AFMC Headquarters. The 30th Air Force Marathon weekend from September is in the books, and the National Museum stays free and open to the public year-round, the best low-pressure first outing for a new family. Past editions are archived in the sidebar.

How I Think About All of This

I have guided hundreds of military families through a PCS to Wright-Patterson, and I watch the base calendar and the base news for one simple reason: the families who settle fastest are not the ones who find the perfect house first, they are the ones who plug in early and start collecting people. Mini Moos & Brews at Wing's, a Thursday run with the Afterburners at Dodge Gym, the Great Pumpkin Palooza at Turtle Pond, a new Child Development Center for the littlest arrivals: each one is a short, genuinely effective way into the community, and I want my clients to use them all in their first month.

When I advise a military family on where to buy, I build a strategy around the commute to the gates, the school districts, the neighborhood feel, and what the years ahead in the Dayton area will hold. News like the new Child Development Center, the new MRI at the 88th Medical Group, the F-15 and F-16 engine program, the AFRL hiring surge, and the Space Force Academy effort is part of that picture too: it tells you whether the region is growing, investing, and worth planting roots in. If you have orders for WPAFB or you are already here and wondering about your housing options, call me. I will give you straight answers and a real plan for this move, starting wherever you are in the process.

"Mid-October on base is when the fall calendar is at its fullest: Mini Moos & Brews and a Pumpkin Powder Dash on the same evening, a wood turning class at the Arts & Crafts Center, pumpkins at Turtle Pond, a Zombie Chase, and Halloween at Wing's and the National Museum. A new Child Development Center and a new MRI tell you the base is investing in its families. That is how a house turns into home, and my job is to get you into the right neighborhood on the right timeline so you are here for all of it."
