This Week at Wright-Patterson: Run for the Fallen, the Air Force Ball & Marathon Weekend.

Wright-Patterson AFB is in the middle of its biggest fall stretch: Run for the Fallen happens today, the annual Air Force Ball lands Saturday at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, and the 30th Air Force Marathon weekend is one week out. For military families and anyone mid-PCS, this is worth paying attention to, because base events are how you meet people, learn your way around, and start feeling like the Dayton area is home.

In this edition: Run for the Fallen this morning, the 2026 Wright-Patterson Air Force Ball and Fitness Under the Wings on Saturday, Plane Talks and the Marathon 5K on Friday the 18th, the full 30th Air Force Marathon weekend on September 17-19, and Rocket Day at the museum on September 26. I also put together the relocation resources to call first if you are still settling in, because half the battle of a good PCS is knowing who to talk to.

Run for the Fallen: Today, Area B Flight Line

The Run for the Fallen takes place this morning from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on the Area B Flight Line at Wright-Patterson, hosted by base Fitness and Sports. It is a ceremonial 1.5K walk and 2.5K run honoring veterans, the fallen, and the families who carry them, and it is open to military personnel, civilian employees, dependents, and retirees. Registration is minimal, the distance is short, and the meaning is the point. If you have been on the base for a month or for twenty years, it is a genuinely moving, unifying way to start the day.

The 2026 Wright-Patterson Air Force Ball: Saturday, September 12

The annual Wright-Patterson Air Force Ball returns Saturday, September 12, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force (1100 Spaatz Street, Dayton). The Air & Space Forces Association's Wright Memorial Chapter hosts it alongside WPAFB, and it is the formal dinner of the year for the military community here: an evening in the museum's halls, a chance for new arrivals to meet leadership, spouses, and the broader base community, and genuinely the night that makes you feel connected to the mission.

Tickets are sold through the Wright Memorial Chapter rather than the base itself, so book quickly if you plan to attend, and new arrivals should reach out even if formal events feel outside your comfort zone. The table you sit at will be full of families who have been exactly where you are. Attire is formal. Confirm the night's schedule against the chapter announcement before gearing up, since formal event details can shift.

Fitness Under the Wings & An Open-Air Museum Saturday

The same Saturday the Air Force Museum is running Fitness Under the Wings, a free group workout held beneath the aircraft in the museum's hangars. It is a low-pressure, family-friendly way to keep moving and wander among B-52s and fighters at the same time. If you are new to the area, the museum itself is a secret weapon: four hangars of aviation history, free admission every day, and an IMAX theater that turns a rainy Saturday into a field trip for the kids.

From Run for the Fallen at Area B to Rocket Day at the museum, September is the base at its most welcoming.

The 30th Air Force Marathon: September 17-19

The 30th Air Force Marathon lands next week, and it is the single best low-pressure way to plug into the base community before you even race. The weekend opens at the Health & Fitness Expo at Wright State's Nutter Center (3640 Colonel Glenn Highway): Thursday, September 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. and Friday, September 18 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The expo is free, full of vendors and community tables, and by far the easiest place for a newcomer to get oriented without filling out a single form.

Friday evening hosts the 5K and the Tailwind Trot 1K kids' run, and race day is Saturday, September 19: the full marathon starts at 6:30 a.m., with the half marathon and 10K following, and every course finishes at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on a Boston-qualifying route. This year's featured aircraft is the F-16 Thunderbird, and active-duty families get military pricing of $10 off the marathon and half and $5 off the 10K and 5K. Whether you run, volunteer, or just stand on a sidewalk and cheer, this is the weekend the entire area comes together around the base.

Plane Talks & Rocket Day at the National Museum

Two free family programs round out the month. Plane Talks on Friday, September 18 is the museum's public program series for aviation fans of every age, and topics change each session, so confirm the subject on the museum's events page before you go. Rocket Day on Saturday, September 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a free STEM event where kids and families build and launch model rockets. If you arrive with elementary-age kids, this is the fastest way to a child who feels at home in a new town, count on it.

For New Arrivals: Who to Call First

If you are still mid-PCS, here are the resources I tell every incoming family about, and one of them is a phone call that takes five minutes:

Relocation Assistance (M&FRC)

The Military & Family Readiness Center at 2000 Allbrook Drive, Building 2, Area A runs the Relocation Assistance Program, (937) 257-3592, weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It covers PCS in-processing, sponsorships, and referrals, and it carries a loan closet of basic household items and car seats while your shipping arrives.

Military Housing Office

For housing questions, the Military Housing Office at (937) 257-6547 is the starting point. On-base family housing is privatized and property-managed by The Properties at Wright Field, (937) 253-6009, about 1,536 family units near the base, and weekly rents tie to 2026 BAH with the Dayton area zone.

Off-base neighborhoods

Beavercreek and Fairborn are the closest, 5 to 15 minutes to the gates, followed by Xenia, Huber Heights, and Kettering. I have written a full military relocation guide and a step-by-step PCS checklist that walk through neighborhoods, schools, and what to do in the first weeks.

September at WPAFB: one welcome event after another, from the Air Force Ball to Marathon weekend.

How I Think About All of This

I have guided hundreds of military families through a PCS to Wright-Patterson, and I keep a close eye on the base for one simple reason: community culture travels. The families who settle fastest here are not the ones who find the perfect house first, they are the ones who plug in early and start collecting people. Run for the Fallen, the Spouses' Club, the school liaison, the M&FRC: each one is a short and genuinely effective way into the community, and I want my clients to use them all.

When I advise a military family on where to buy, I take the same approach: a strategy built around the commute, the schools, the neighborhood feel, and what the years ahead in the Dayton area will hold, which is why I spend so much time close to the base itself. If you have an upcoming assignment at WPAFB or you are already here and wondering about your housing options, call me. I will give you straight answers and help you put a real plan around this move, starting wherever you are.

"Point me at Wright-Patterson on a September weekend and I will show you why so many military families choose to stay in the Dayton area long after their assignment ends. My job is to get you into the right neighborhood, on the right timeline, before your first fall on base wraps up."
