This Week in Dayton: Two Fall
Food Festas, the 30th Air Force
Marathon, and New Eats.
By Jason White
Mid-September is when the Dayton area really hits its stride. This weekend alone stacks two food festivals, a community block party, and the Taste of the Oregon District into two days, and the weekend after brings the 30th Air Force Marathon to the base. Meanwhile, a breakfast favorite is headed to The Greene and a family-run Mexican spot just opened its doors in West Dayton.
In this edition: the Italian Fall Festa in Kettering, the 68th Dayton Greek Festival, Taste of the Oregon District, and the Free Zion Community Festival this Saturday, plus the Cornerstone Music Series in Centerville and the full Air Force Marathon weekend at Wright-Patterson. For openings: Scramblers is coming to The Greene and Lalo's Mexican Restaurant is open in West Dayton, with a photography exhibition at the Art Institute for a slower autumn afternoon.
Here is everything fresh I have not covered before.
New Restaurants and Grand Openings
Scramblers Is Headed to The Greene
One of the most anticipated openings of the season is Scramblers, the Ohio-born breakfast restaurant taking over the former Taste of Belgium space at 10 Greene Boulevard inside The Greene in Beavercreek. The family-friendly menu centers on breakfast done well: eggs, pancakes, omelets, and brunch-style plates that make The Greene a morning destination as much as an evening one. No exact date has been announced yet, and I will post the moment the doors open.
Lalo's Mexican Restaurant Opens in West Dayton
A brand-new family-owned spot, Lalo's Mexican Restaurant, is now open at 100 N. James H. McGee Boulevard in West Dayton, near Rut's drive-thru. The Pedroza siblings run the show, and the menu leans on made-from-scratch classics: vegetable fajitas, enchiladas mole, pollo jalisco, and papas locas, with lunch and dinner service through the week. It is a welcome new reason to cross the city for a meal.
From Scramblers at The Greene to Lalo's in West Dayton, the new openings keep the momentum building through the fall.
The Food Festa Weekend: September 11-13
Italian Fall Festa: September 11-13 in Kettering
Kettering kicks off the fall food season with the Italian Fall Festa, the 49th annual Italian-heritage festival at Bella Villa Hall, 2625 County Line Road. The schedule is all about the table: a baked-pasta dinner Friday evening, stuffed shells on Saturday, and spaghetti and meatballs on Sunday, with bocce, live music, and the Meatball Madness 5K mixed in. Admission and parking are both free, and free shuttles run from Reynolds & Reynolds.
Dayton Greek Festival: September 11-13
Up on Belmonte Park, the Dayton Greek Festival returns for its 68th year at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 500 Belmonte Park North. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. A $5 weekend pass is good for all three days, admission is free until 3 p.m. Friday, and kids 12 and under get in free. Gyros, spanakopita, baklava, live bouzouki music, and a welcoming community make it one of the most complete cultural weekends of the year.
Taste of the Oregon District: September 12
Saturday is the Taste of the Oregon District on Fifth Street from 1 to 6 p.m., and entrance is free. The idea is simple: buy $1 tickets, then sample taste-size portions from a dozen-plus district restaurants while carrying a DORA drink down the street. It is the one day of the year that turns Dayton's most characterful dining block into one long tasting menu.
Free Zion Community Festival: September 12
In the Kettering area, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church holds its free Community Festival at 5550 Munger Road from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food, live music, games, crafts, prizes, and hayrides make it a relaxed, no-cost family afternoon close to home.
Italian pasta dinners, Greek pastries, and Oregon District tasting tickets all land the same weekend.
The 30th Air Force Marathon Weekend: September 17-19
Race Weekend Details
The Air Force Marathon marks its 30th anniversary this year, and the 2026 featured aircraft is the F-16 Thunderbird, a fitting nod to years of race-day flyovers. The weekend opens Thursday and Friday with the free, two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Nutter Center at Wright State, 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, where runners pick up packets and stock up on gear. Friday hosts the 5K and the Tailwind Trot kids' 1K. The main event is Saturday, September 19: the full marathon, half, and 10 kilometer start at 6:30 a.m. and finish at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, on a Boston-qualifying course with a relay and Challenge Series for team runners.
Why This Weekend Matters to the Area
Race weekend brings thousands of runners and their families to the base and the hotels around the Loop, and it is one of the biggest weekends of the year for Beavercreek, Fairborn, and Riverside. If you are near Dayton-Xenia Road or The Greene that Saturday morning, expect traffic and energy in equal measure. And if you live in one of those communities, you already know what the flyover does to everyone standing in a front yard.
Cornerstone in the Park: September 18
On the same Friday as race-weekend kickoff, the Cornerstone Music Series closes its season at Cornerstone Park in Centerville. The free outdoor concert at the pavilion brings a multi-band lineup to the lawn at 5210 Cornerstone North Boulevard, and a lawn chair plus a to-go dinner is all you need. It is a relaxed way to end the week in the south suburbs.
A Quiet Museum Option in the Middle of It All
If the festival weekends feel like too much, the Dayton Art Institute has something quieter, open every day of the fall: Looking for Japan: Early Japanese Photography, on view September 5 through November 29. Built from albums, postcards, and hand-colored prints from the Meiji era (1868 to 1912), it shows how photography documented a nation in transformation. It is worth a morning, and the museum's hilltop grounds are worth another hour after.
From the Expo at the Nutter Center to race morning at the Air Force Museum, the 30th Air Force Marathon anchors the weekend ahead.
Why I Track All of This
I have served this market for over 20 years, and mid-September is when the region again shows what it is made of. A 49-year-old Italian festival keeps filling the hall off County Line Road. A Greek festival opens its gates to a 68th season of guests. A marathon that started small returns for its 30th run while the Air Force Museum hosts the finish. Every one of these is a reason people choose to live here.
New restaurants and grand openings matter too. Scramblers at The Greene is another reason to live in Beavercreek, and Lalo's gives West Dayton a fresh table to discover. When I see openings and events stacking up across Kettering, Centerville, Beavercreek, and the rest of the suburbs, it tells me these are communities people are choosing, investing in, and raising families in.
For buyers, that context matters. For sellers, it means your home belongs to a working and growing region. And for anyone considering a move to the Dayton area, this is the clearest view of the region's momentum.
Whether you are buying, selling, or just curious about what your home might be worth, I am here with straight answers and a strategy that fits your situation.
"From the Italian Fall Festa and Greek Festival to Taste of the Oregon District and the 30th Air Force Marathon, mid-September is one of the busiest stretches of the year, and I want my clients to feel as close to every bit of it as I do."
