Fall is my favorite season in the Dayton area, and right now, in early October, we are sitting right in the sweet spot. The leaves around Yellow Springs are about to hit peak color, the festival calendar is stacked from Waynesville to Xenia to downtown Dayton, the farms are full of pumpkins and apples, and the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre have some of the best shows of the year coming up. If you have been waiting for the perfect weekend to get out and enjoy this region, this is it.
I spend my days helping people buy and sell homes across Beavercreek, Centerville, Bellbrook, Kettering, and the surrounding communities, which means I get to see firsthand what makes each neighborhood special as the seasons turn. This guide pulls together what is actually happening and coming up from now through November, from the can't-miss marquee events to the kinds of hidden-gem spots that make a community feel like home. Everything here is real, current, and worth checking out this season.
Festivals and Community Events
The October and November festival calendar in the Dayton area is genuinely deep. Here is what I would put on your radar right now.
October 10: The Big Festival Saturday
Mark Saturday, October 10 on the calendar, because this is one of the biggest festival days of the year in the Miami Valley. The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival takes over Main Street in Waynesville with roughly 400 juried craft vendors from 25-plus states and sauerkraut served every way you can imagine, including donuts. It is free, it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, and it is one of the best-attended craft festivals in the Midwest.
The same day, the Yellow Springs Street Fair fills downtown Yellow Springs with 200-plus vendors, live music, a Kids Zone, and the village's signature eclectic energy from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closer to home, Xenia's Oktoberfest and Fall Festival brings crafts, a farmer's market, and a straw bale maze downtown, the Enon Apple Butter Festival celebrates its 46th year up north, and Vandalia's Fall Festival rounds out a full day of community celebrations. You really cannot go wrong anywhere you point the car.
Ohio Renaissance Festival: Waynesville
The Ohio Renaissance Festival runs weekends through November 1 at Renaissance Park in Waynesville, and it is still going strong. Nine themed weekends of full-contact jousting, artisan craft, giant turkey legs, and a complete 16th-century village. Viking Weekend lands October 3-4 and Time Travelers Weekend October 10-11, so there is plenty of season left for families who have not made it out yet.
Dayton Music Fest
For something a little different, the Dayton Music Fest returns to the Oregon District October 9-10 for its 21st year. It is a multi-venue celebration of original local music, with bands, singer-songwriters, MCs, and DJs playing across spots like Yellow Cab Tavern, Blind Bob's, Oregon Express, and The Brightside, and a portion of proceeds supports WYSO Public Radio. It is the best way to hear what Dayton's music scene is making right now.
Halloween Season: Fairborn, Beavercreek, and the Oregon District
Halloween is a big deal around here. The Fairborn Halloween Festival (October 16-18) is one of the area's largest, with carnival rides, 80-plus food and craft vendors, a beer garden, the Spooktacular Costume Contest and Parade Friday night, a Zombie Walk, and trick-or-treating at vendor booths on Sunday. It is free and family-friendly.
In Beavercreek, the Boo Bash Trail turns Dominick Lofino Park at 640 Grange Hall Road into a trick-or-treat trail on Saturday, October 17 from 9 to 11 a.m., with festive displays, costumed characters, and big and emergency vehicles for the kids to explore. Also on the 17th, the Dayton Chocolate Festival moves to the Greene County Expo Center in Xenia for its 23rd year, which is a very good reason to bring the whole family.
Then on October 24, the Hauntfest on Fifth celebrates its 40th anniversary in the Oregon District with a Horror Through the Decades theme, costume contests, live music, and one of the wildest street parties of the season. It runs 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Fifth Street and is 18 and up, so plan the babysitter.
November: A Cappella, Sugarplum, and the Holiday Kickoff
November starts strong. The Beavercreek International Festival celebrates the cultures that make the east side home on November 7, and the Sugarplum Festival of Trees (November 6-8 in Kettering) fills the Life Connection of Ohio space with decorated trees and wreaths as a benefit for Dayton Children's Hospital. The Kettering National A Cappella Festival (November 13-14 at Kettering Fairmont) is billed as the largest educational a cappella festival in the country, with the vocal group m-pact headlining Saturday night. It is a hidden gem for music lovers.
And the holiday season officially kicks off at Day Air Ballpark, where the Dragons' Deck the Diamond winter lights show returns starting November 13 with more than 1.5 million lights. The Dayton Holiday Festival then opens Thanksgiving weekend with the Grande Illumination lighting the big tree on Courthouse Square and the Children's Parade Spectacular in Lights. It is the moment downtown Dayton turns into a winter wonderland.
From pumpkin patches in Yellow Springs and Bellbrook to apple orchards in Lebanon and West Alexandria, autumn farm season is a short drive from every Dayton suburb.
Fall on the Farm: Pumpkins, Apples, and Corn Mazes
No fall guide is complete without the farms, and the Dayton area has some of the best in the state.
Young's Jersey Dairy: Yellow Springs
The icon. Young's Jersey Dairy runs Cowvin's Corny Maze and Playland daily through November 1, pick-your-own pumpkins through October 25, and Haunted Wagon Rides on Friday and Saturday nights through Halloween. It is the annual fall institution families across the region plan their whole season around, and it is only about 25 minutes from Beavercreek. The homemade ice cream alone is worth the drive.
Lucas Brothers Fall Festival: Bellbrook
Less of a trek and right in Greene County, Lucas Brothers Fall Festival at Candlebrook Farm in Bellbrook runs through October 25 with a six-acre corn maze, hayrides, pick-your-own pumpkins, and farm animals at 3269 Ferry Road. For families in Bellbrook, Centerville, and the south suburbs, this is one of the best local bets for a perfect fall day out.
Apple Picking: Hidden Valley, Peifer, and Tuken's
For apple picking, Hidden Valley Orchards in Lebanon has u-pick apples in full swing through October, plus a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and the annual Pumpkin Celebration October 10-11. It is popular with Beavercreek and Centerville families for good reason. Closer to Yellow Springs, Peifer Orchards runs u-pick apples on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the farm market open through December, and checking their weekly Crop Report tells you exactly what is ripe. Out west, Tuken's Orchard and Farm Market in West Alexandria keeps u-pick going through November 30 with varieties including Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Ida Red, and Pink Lady. Call ahead to confirm what is ready.
Get Outside: Fall Foliage and Trails
The best leaf-peeping in Ohio happens right here in Greene County, and this year the forecast is a good one. Ohio's statewide peak is expected around October 19-24, and Greene County typically peaks right in that late-October window, so the next few weeks are the sweet spot.
John Bryan, Clifton Gorge, and Glen Helen
John Bryan State Park in Yellow Springs is widely considered one of the best fall-color parks near Dayton. Hike the South Gorge and North Rim loop for elevated views over the Little Miami gorge, then walk into Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, where the narrowest, most dramatic stretch of the limestone gorge hugs the river with rushing water and a colorful canopy. These connect with Glen Helen Nature Preserve, more than 1,000 acres of forested trails over creeks, so you can make a full day of it. John Bryan is free to enter.
Little Miami Scenic Trail
For a different view, the Little Miami Scenic Trail runs 78 paved miles through Greene County from Xenia to Yellow Springs and beyond. It is perfect for bikes, and the leaf-peeping along the river corridor is spectacular without the trailhead crowds. Grab coffee in Yellow Springs first and make a morning of it.
Concerts, Broadway, and Sports
As the weather turns, the indoor and evening scene takes center stage.
The Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre
The Schuster Center has a strong fall lineup. The Notebook runs October 6-11 as part of the new Broadway in Dayton season, and Mystic Pizza: A New Musical lands November 6-7. Over at the Victoria Theatre, Mariachi Herencia de Mexico plays October 9, Outlander in Concert brings a live symphonic orchestra to the score on October 15, Dayton Ballet pairs A Midsummer Night's Dream with a contemporary commission on October 24, and the Vienna Boys Choir performs November 6. Close out the month with Love Actually in Concert on November 28, the holiday favorite screened with a live orchestra. There is something for every taste.
University of Dayton Flyers
As a Dayton grad and a proud Flyers fan, this one is close to my heart. Flyers basketball tips off the 2026-27 season at UD Arena on Monday, November 2 against NJIT, on the opening night of college basketball, then hosts Northern Illinois, Siena, Cincinnati, and Central Michigan through November. There is nothing quite like game night at UD Arena, and it is the unofficial start of winter in Dayton.
Farmers Markets and Cozy Spots
For a slower-paced fall, lean into the markets.
The Greene County Farmers Market of Beavercreek runs Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 4051 Indian Ripple Road and continues through the fall and winter. Downtown, 2nd Street Market stays open year-round with produce, flowers, bakers, and artisans, making it a warm, cozy stop as the temperature drops. And in Yellow Springs, the 4 Seasons Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings year-round, easily paired with coffee at one of the village's many great little cafes.
What This Means for the Communities I Serve
I have been doing this for over 20 years, and one thing I have learned is that the best proof of a thriving community is the calendar of things that bring people together. A Renaissance festival that runs all season. A festival Saturday in October that pulls the whole region out. A Boo Bash Trail that fills a Beavercreek park on a Saturday morning. New Broadway shows at the Schuster, a cappella at Kettering Fairmont, and some of the best apple orchards in Ohio a short drive away.
These are not random data points. They are the signs of a region people are choosing to invest in, build in, and raise their families in. When I help a family buy a home in Beavercreek or Centerville or Kettering, I am not just matching them with a floor plan and a school district. I am matching them with a community and a lifestyle, and fall is the best time of year to feel exactly what that means.
