Over the years, UD has grown into a nationally recognized Catholic research university with more than 8,000 students, but the values that founded it remain at the core of everything the university does. That Marianist tradition — emphasis on community, service, and forming the whole person — is something you can feel on campus and in the way UD engages with the Dayton community.

What Makes the Marianist Tradition Special

There are only three Marianist universities in the United States, and UD is the largest and most well-known. The Marianist educational philosophy focuses on educating the whole person — mind, body, and spirit. Flyers Basketball: A Dayton Tradition

The Flyers have a storied history, including an appearance in the 1967 NCAA Championship game, and they continue to be a competitive force in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

On game nights, the city comes alive. The Flyer Faithful — one of the most passionate fan bases in college basketball — pack the arena and fill the local restaurants and bars before and after games. For many Dayton families, attending a Flyers game is a tradition passed down through generations. As a proud Flyer myself, I can tell you there is nothing quite like it.

Christmas on Campus

One of UD's most beloved traditions is Christmas on Campus, held annually on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in early December. For decades, thousands of UD students have opened their campus to local children and families for an evening of games, food, crafts, music, and holiday celebration.

It is a large-scale community service event that perfectly embodies the Marianist spirit. Students volunteer their time, the campus is transformed into a winter wonderland, and families from across Dayton come together for a night of joy. Christmas on Campus has become one of the signature events in the Dayton holiday calendar, and it is a beautiful reminder of what happens when a university truly commits to its community.
