This Week at Wright-Patterson: Oktoberfest, Family Nights & the October Calendar.

The 30th Air Force Marathon weekend is happening right now, and once the last runner crosses the line at the National Museum on Saturday morning, the base settles into its fall rhythm. This edition is fresh for September 18, 2026, so you know exactly what comes next. The week of September 21 through 27 brings Oktoberfest on base, a Dolly Parton tribute night, a family movie night, Rocket Day at the museum, and one of the biggest culture weekends downtown Dayton has all year just off base, and October already has confirmed dates for holiday hours, pumpkins, and Halloween events that matter to a relocating family.

In this edition: the marathon wrap, the full week ahead, and the October calendar I would put on paper the day you arrive. Then the short list of newcomer programs I tell every incoming family to use first, because the families who settle fastest plug in early.

The Marathon Weekend Wraps: What Happens Next

The 30th Air Force Marathon weekend closes with race day on Saturday, September 19 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force: the full marathon at 6:30 a.m., the half and 10K at 7:15 a.m., with the F-16 Thunderbird as the featured aircraft and military pricing through the marathon website. If you missed the expo, do not worry: the museum itself is free and open to the public every day of the year, and it stays one of the best indoor places in America for a rainy afternoon with kids, and it sits right at the base gate in Area B, so it doubles as a low-pressure first outing for newcomers.

When the crowds clear, the FSS calendar does not pause. Thursday night brings the first big community evening after the marathon, and the weekend after that stacks two of the base's most family-friendly events of the year. Here is the week ahead, day by day.

Marathon weekend opens the season, and Oktoberfest, family movie nights and the pumpkin events right behind it keep a new family connected through October.

The Week Ahead: Oktoberfest, a Tribute Night & the Family Favorites

Oktoberfest returns Thursday, September 24, 5 to 9 p.m. at Wing's Bar & Grille in Area A: German food and beer, live music, and a free stein (limited supply) to celebrate the season. It is a relaxed, family-friendly way to meet neighbors and fellow service members, and it fills up, so arrive early. If this is your first month on the installation, this is the single easiest evening to meet the community in a room full of people in the same season of life as you.

Friday, September 25 pairs two evenings that suit different families. Dolly Parton Tribute Night at Wing's Bar is a live show in the family-friendly style the base bar and grille is known for. The same night, Force Support runs a Kids Movie Night in the Community Center for younger kids: popcorn and a family movie, and usually a room full of base families. Sunday, September 27 at 2:30 p.m., the Wright-Patterson Spouses' Club has discounted tickets to West Side Story at the Schuster Center downtown, where the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance stages Bernstein's musical downtown with Dayton Opera, Dayton Ballet, Dayton Philharmonic, and Wright State. For a first weekend off the installation, pair the show with dinner in the Oregon District and you will understand why my clients fall for Dayton fast.

Saturday, September 26 stacks the two big family events of the month. Rocket Day at the National Museum, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a free STEM event where kids and families build and launch model rockets with the Wright Stuff Rocketeers; launches are weather-dependent, so check the museum's events page before you load the car. The same morning brings the base's annual Pink Ribbon Walk, a short community walk for breast cancer awareness. Both are zero-pressure ways to plug in, and for a family with elementary-age kids, Rocket Day is the fastest route to a child who feels at home in a new town.

October on Base: Holiday Hours, Pumpkins & Halloween

October opens with the 99th anniversary of Wright Field on October 1, a piece of the base's history worth knowing even before the parties. Then mark Monday, October 12 on your calendar before anything else: the base observes an AFMC Family Day around the Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day federal holiday, and many gates and base services run reduced or adjusted hours. If you are mid-PCS, plan any in-processing appointments, ID card renewals, or visits to base services around that week, and check the base's holiday-hours notice before you drive to a gate expecting normal traffic.

The FSS family lineup continues with Mini Moos & Brews at Wing's Bar on Friday, October 16, an evening with the famous miniature highland cows from nearby, plus a Pumpkin Powder Dash fun run the same weekend. Then the Great Pumpkin Palooza lands Thursday, October 22, 4 to 7 p.m. at Turtle Pond: a free fall event with a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin bowling, mummy races, caricatures, a photo booth, and a DJ. If you arrive in October, that is your one-stop evening for meeting the community. Later in the week, the base hosts Retiree Appreciation Day on October 23 at the Wright-Patt Club, a free day open to retirees, veterans, and their families connecting them with the 88th Medical Group, the Dayton VA, and DFAS, and the National Museum hosts Troops and Treats in late October for trick-or-treating under the aircraft. Base Halloween events, Horror Night and the costume contests, sit on the wrightpattfss.com calendar, so bookmark it as the single source of truth. I keep this page updated as the base confirms more dates.

For New Arrivals: The Programs to Use First

If you are still mid-PCS, here is the short list I give every incoming family, and the first two items are free and scheduled for you:

Wright Start newcomer orientation

The base runs a monthly in-person orientation for newly arrived active-duty members and their families, the second Tuesday of the month, 8 a.m. to noon at the Community Center, covering the mission, leadership priorities, and support services on the installation. Spouses can attend a tailored Heart Link orientation alongside it. Everything you need to know in one sitting, and a room full of people in the same season of life as you. Start at the official newcomer site, wpafb.af.mil/Newcomers/, to see the next session date.

School Liaison Program

There are no on-base schools, kids attend Beavercreek, Fairborn, or Mad River district schools, and the School Liaison Officer is the single point of contact for enrollment and transfers. The office sits in the Military & Family Readiness Center at 2000 Allbrook Drive, Building 2, Area A, (937) 257-3592. The program actively tracks inbound families and recommends reaching out six months to a year before your report date, so it is never too early to call.

Community Center & M&FRC

The new Community Center at 4771 Lahm Circle (Area A) hosts classes, workshops, and events most weekdays, including the Kids Movie Night above, and the Military & Family Readiness Center runs the Relocation Assistance Program with a loan closet of household basics and car seats while your shipment is in transit. Both are natural first stops that cost nothing but an afternoon.

Housing questions

The Military Housing Office at (937) 257-6547 is the starting point, and on-base family housing is privatized and managed by The Properties at Wright Field, (937) 253-6009. Off base, Beavercreek and Fairborn are closest to the gates, 5 to 15 minutes, and I have written the full military relocation guide and a step-by-step PCS checklist covering neighborhoods, schools, and the first weeks.

How I Think About All of This

I have guided hundreds of military families through a PCS to Wright-Patterson, and I watch the base calendar for one simple reason: the families who settle fastest are not the ones who find the perfect house first, they are the ones who plug in early and start collecting people. Oktoberfest at Wing's, a Kids Movie Night at the Community Center, the Wright Start orientation, the School Liaison: each one is a short, genuinely effective way into the community, and I want my clients to use them all in their first month.

When I advise a military family on where to buy, I build a strategy around the commute to the gates, the school districts, the neighborhood feel, and what the years ahead in the Dayton area will hold. If you have orders for WPAFB or you are already here and wondering about your housing options, call me. I will give you straight answers and a real plan for this move, starting wherever you are in the process.

"The marathon brings everyone together for one weekend, but the base community is built in all the ordinary weeks after it. Oktoberfest on Thursday, a movie night at the Community Center, a pumpkin event at Turtle Pond: that is how a house turns into home. My job is to get you into the right neighborhood on the right timeline so you are here for the ones that follow."
