02

This is the week the entire Dayton area turns toward Wright-Patterson: the 30th Air Force Marathon weekend lands Thursday through Saturday, and it is the single best few days of the year for a military family to feel connected to the base community. Last week's Run for the Fallen and the Air Force Ball have wrapped, and the fall calendar that follows the marathon is packed with family-friendly events for anyone settling in.

In this edition: the full Air Force Marathon weekend September 17-19, including the free public expo at the Nutter Center, the Tailwind Trot kids' run, the 5K, and race day at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Then Oktoberfest on base September 24, Rocket Day and the Pink Ribbon Walk on September 26, a first look at October, and the newcomer programs I tell every incoming family to use first.

The 30th Air Force Marathon: September 17-19

The 30th Air Force Marathon is the weekend the Miami Valley gathers around the base, and you do not have to run a step to be part of it. It opens with the Health & Fitness Expo at Wright State's Nutter Center (3640 Colonel Glenn Highway): Thursday, September 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. and Friday, September 18 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The expo is free and open to the public, with more than 100 exhibitors, community tables, and packet pickup. For a newcomer, it is the lowest-pressure orientation on the base calendar: walk in, grab a coffee, meet the organizations that support military families, and leave without signing up for anything.

Friday evening is the family block. The Tailwind Trot 1K kids' run steps off at 6 p.m. at Setzer Pavilion behind the Nutter Center, followed by the 5K opening ceremony at 6:15 p.m. and the 5K start at 6:30 p.m. The Gourmet Pasta Dinner runs 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, the traditional pre-race meal under the aircraft. Tickets go through the marathon website and sell out, so decide quickly if you want a table.

Race day is Saturday, September 19, starting and finishing at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The full marathon starts at 6:30 a.m. on a Boston-qualifying course, the 10K and half marathon follow at 7:15 a.m., and this year brings a new RUCK division to the 10K and half for anyone who prefers a weighted challenge. The featured aircraft is the F-16 Thunderbird, and active-duty families get military pricing of $10 off the marathon and half and $5 off the 10K and 5K. If you are not running, volunteer or just stand on the course and cheer: the museum grounds become the friendliest gathering in the region by mid-morning.

From the free expo at the Nutter Center to the finish line at the National Museum, the marathon weekend is how the region celebrates the base.

After the Marathon: Oktoberfest, Rocket Day & the Pink Ribbon Walk

The base keeps the momentum going the following week. Oktoberfest returns Thursday, September 24, 5 to 9 p.m. at Wing's Bar & Grille in Area A: German food and beer, live music, and a free stein (limited supply) to celebrate the season. It is a relaxed, family-friendly way to meet neighbors and fellow service members, and it fills up, so arrive early.

Saturday, September 26 stacks two community events. Rocket Day at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a free STEM event where kids and families build and launch model rockets with the Wright Stuff Rocketeers; launches are weather-dependent, so check the museum's events page before you load the car. The same morning, the base hosts its annual Pink Ribbon Walk, a short community walk for breast cancer awareness. Both are zero-pressure ways to plug in, and for a family with elementary-age kids, Rocket Day is the fastest route to a child who feels at home in a new town.

A First Look at October

October opens with the 99th anniversary of Wright Field on October 1, a piece of the base's history worth knowing even before the parties. The FSS family lineup continues with Mini Moos and Brews at Wing's Bar on Friday, October 16, and the Great Pumpkin Palooza at Turtle Pond on Thursday, October 22, 4 to 7 p.m.: a free fall event with a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin bowling, mummy races, caricatures, a photo booth, and a DJ. If you arrive in October, that is your one-stop evening for meeting the community. I will keep this page updated as the base confirms more dates.

For New Arrivals: The Programs to Use First

If you are still mid-PCS, here is the short list I give every incoming family, and the first two items are free and scheduled for you:

Wright Start newcomer orientation

The base runs a monthly in-person orientation for newly arrived active-duty members and their families that covers the mission, leadership priorities, and the support services on the installation. Spouses can attend a tailored Heart Link orientation alongside it. Everything you need to know in one sitting, and a room full of people in the same season of life as you. Start at the official newcomer site, wpafb.af.mil/Newcomers/, to see the next session.

School Liaison Program

There are no on-base schools; kids attend Beavercreek, Fairborn, or Mad River district schools, and the School Liaison Officer is the single point of contact for enrollment and transfers. The office sits in the Military & Family Readiness Center at 2000 Allbrook Drive, Building 2, Area A, (937) 257-3592. The program actively tracks inbound families and recommends reaching out six months to a year before your report date, so it is never too early to call.

Community Center & M&FRC

The new Community Center at 4771 Lahm Circle (Area A) hosts classes, workshops, and events most weekdays, and the Military & Family Readiness Center runs the Relocation Assistance Program with a loan closet of household basics while your shipment is in transit. Both are natural first stops that cost nothing but an afternoon.

Housing questions

The Military Housing Office at (937) 257-6547 is the starting point; on-base family housing is privatized and managed by The Properties at Wright Field, (937) 253-6009. Off base, Beavercreek and Fairborn are closest to the gates, 5 to 15 minutes, and I have written the full military relocation guide and a step-by-step PCS checklist covering neighborhoods, schools, and the first weeks.

Marathon morning on the flight line with runners in the distance and the museum hangars glowing in golden light

Race weekend, Oktoberfest, Rocket Day: the base's fall calendar is built for families who are just getting settled.

How I Think About All of This

I have guided hundreds of military families through a PCS to Wright-Patterson, and I watch the base calendar for one simple reason: the families who settle fastest are not the ones who find the perfect house first, they are the ones who plug in early and start collecting people. The marathon expo, Wright Start, the School Liaison, the Community Center: each one is a short, genuinely effective way into the community, and I want my clients to use them all.

When I advise a military family on where to buy, I build a strategy around the commute to the gates, the school districts, the neighborhood feel, and what the years ahead in the Dayton area will hold. If you have orders for WPAFB or you are already here and wondering about your housing options, call me. I will give you straight answers and a real plan for this move, starting wherever you are in the process.

"Show up at the expo on Thursday and you will leave knowing more about this base than most people learn in a year. My job is to get you into the right neighborhood on the right timeline, so the first fall on base is the start of a community, not just a house."
