This Week at Wright-Patterson: COMPASS, Halloween on Base & the Mid-October Calendar.

September's big evenings are wrapping up and the October calendar is confirmed far enough ahead that a relocating family can plan around it. This edition is fresh for September 25, 2026: Oktoberfest at Wing's was last night, the Dolly Parton Tribute Night and Kids Movie Night land tonight, Rocket Day at the museum is tomorrow, and October opens with two anchor events already on the Force Support calendar, the Pink Ribbon Walk on Thursday, October 1 and the 99th anniversary of Wright Field on Friday, October 2. There is also real base news this week worth knowing before you buy: the club membership program is now Wright-Patt COMPASS, the 88th Air Base Wing welcomed a new command team this summer, and the base medical group is installing a major new MRI.

In this edition: the first weekend of October, the mid-month calendar through Halloween, the base news that tells you where the installation is headed, and the short list of newcomer programs I tell every incoming family to use first. The September editions are archived at the links in the sidebar if you are catching up on marathon weekend and the weeks around it.

The Week Ahead: September Wraps, October Opens

Consider September, in the rearview. Oktoberfest filled Wing's Bar & Grille Thursday, September 24 with German food, live music, and a free limited stein, and Friday, September 25 pairs the Dolly Parton Tribute Night at Wing's with the base's family Kids Movie Night at the Community Center. Saturday, September 26 closes the month with Rocket Day at the National Museum, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where kids and families build and launch model rockets with the Wright Stuff Rocketeers; launches are weather-dependent, so check the museum's events page before you load the car. If you are new on the installation, do not feel like you missed it, the FSS calendar is just getting started.

October opens with the Pink Ribbon Walk on Thursday, October 1, 5 to 7 p.m. at Prairie Trace Golf Course, the base's annual breast cancer awareness walk, free and family-friendly with awareness and info stations along the route. Friday, October 2 marks the 99th anniversary of Wright Field, 4 to 7 p.m., with historians, base leadership, civic leaders, and a live performance by the Band of Flight: Wright Field was dedicated in 1927, and the anniversary is the kind of evening that quietly teaches a new family what the base stands for. The Heritage of Flight Festival takes over downtown New Carlisle October 2 through 4, with the Parade of Planes rolling restored aircraft down Main Street behind vintage tractors on Saturday at 11 a.m., plus a classic-car cruise-in Friday, a pancake breakfast, carnival rides, and food and craft vendors. It is a short drive from Fairborn and the gate, and for aviation families it feels like home. My Dayton week-ahead guide has the full rundown, and if you live south of the base, Centerville's Fall Fest at Stubbs Park on Saturday, October 3 is the off-base way to meet neighbors the same weekend.

October runs from the Pink Ribbon Walk and the 99th anniversary of Wright Field to Mini Moos, the Great Pumpkin Palooza, and Halloween at Wing's.

Mid-October: Holiday Hours, Mini Moos, Pumpkins & Halloween

Mark the week of October 9 through 12 before anything else if you are mid-PCS. The base typically observes an AFMC Family Day on Friday, October 9 with reduced or adjusted hours at many gates and services, and the Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day federal holiday lands Monday, October 12, when most base services close. If you are arriving this month, plan any in-processing appointments, ID card renewals, and visits to base services around that week, and check the base's holiday-hours notice before you drive to a gate expecting normal traffic.

The Force Support family lineup continues through the month. Mini Moos & Brews returns Friday, October 16, 4 to 8 p.m. at Wing's Bar & Grille, an evening with the famous miniature highland cows, free cookies and swag, and the FSS's twelve-dollar moo beer flights; the Pumpkin Powder Dash fun run steps off the same evening, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jarvis Fitness Center. Then the Great Pumpkin Palooza lands Thursday, October 22, 4 to 7 p.m. at Turtle Pond: a free fall event with a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin bowling, mummy races, caricatures, a photo booth, and a DJ. If you arrive in October, that is your one-stop evening for meeting the community.

Later in the week the base honors its people twice on Friday, October 23: Retiree Appreciation Day at the Wright-Patt Club, a free day open to retirees, veterans, and their families connecting them with the 88th Medical Group, the Dayton VA, and DFAS, and the USO Center's registered event for National Day of the Deployed, a family gathering that honors deployed service members. Then came the two dates the FSS just posted that finish the month: Horror Movie Night on Saturday, October 24 at Wing's Bar & Grille, and the base's Halloween Party on Saturday, October 31, 3 to 8 p.m., also at Wing's, with a haunted hallway and a costume contest. The National Museum hosts Troops and Treats in late October for free trick-or-treating under the aircraft, with the 2026 date on the museum's calendar at nationalmuseum.af.mil. Ask me about the base Halloween lineup and I will tell you the same thing I tell every incoming family: bookmark wrightpattfss.com and check it weekly, the calendar is the single source of truth.

Base News Worth Knowing: COMPASS, a New Command Team & a New MRI

Three pieces of base news matter to families deciding where to buy or how to settle in, and all three are confirmed. First, the club program: the Wright-Patt Club membership officially transitioned to Wright-Patt COMPASS, the 88th Force Support Squadron's new name for the installation's club membership. Existing memberships carried over automatically, and the Country Club membership covers dining at the Wright-Patt Club, the Courses at Wright-Patt (Prairie Trace and Twin Base golf), the Hobby Complex, and Kittyhawk Lanes, plus the dining and family events calendar. For a family that wants one card that unlocks an easy social life on base, this is the deal to know about; details are on wrightpattfss.com/compass.

Second, leadership: the 88th Air Base Wing welcomed a new command team this summer, with Col. Jason Okumura as installation commander and Chief Master Sgt. Jason Vollmer as the wing's top enlisted leader. Col. Okumura previously served at the base and knows the community, so programs largely continue as they were, but a new command team is worth knowing by name when you read base news or attend a welcome event. Up the chain, Lt. Gen. Linda S. Hurry, who led Air Force Materiel Command through the leadership transition, was confirmed as AFMC commander effective January 30, 2026; AFMC's headquarters sits right at Wright-Patterson, so her confirmation is hometown news for the Dayton area.

Third, medical care: the 88th Medical Group is installing a new Siemens MAGNETOM Lumina 3T MRI, a major diagnostic upgrade that means sharper images and shorter exam times for the families who use base medical. For a relocating family weighing whether the base clinic will cover their healthcare needs, this is the kind of concrete signal that the installation is investing in its people and their families.

One archive from earlier this month for anyone still catching up: on September 21 and 22, Ohio's senators and governor rolled out a coordinated, statewide effort, with an 11-member team, to land the new U.S. Space Force Academy at Wright-Patterson. It is early-stage news and a decision will take time, but the state and the region are actively investing in the base's future, which supports the long-term stability of jobs, housing demand, and community investment across the Dayton area. I will keep this page updated as the process moves.

For New Arrivals: The Programs to Use First

If you are still mid-PCS, here is the short list I give every incoming family, and the first two items are free and scheduled for you:

Wright Start newcomer orientation

The base runs a monthly in-person orientation for newly arrived active-duty members and their families at the Wright-Patterson Community Center (4771 Lahm Circle, Area A), covering the mission, leadership priorities, and support services on the installation, with briefings from dozens of local organizations. Spouses can attend the tailored Heart Link orientation alongside it. The exact October session date is on the official newcomer site, wpafb.af.mil/Newcomers/, so check there before you plan the rest of your week.

School Liaison Program

There are no on-base schools; kids attend Beavercreek, Fairborn, or Mad River district schools, and the School Liaison Officer is the single point of contact for enrollment and transfers. The office sits in the Military & Family Readiness Center at 2000 Allbrook Drive, Building 2, Area A, (937) 257-3592. The program actively tracks inbound families and recommends reaching out six months to a year before your report date, so it is never too early to call.

Community Center, M&FRC & COMPASS

The Community Center at 4771 Lahm Circle (Area A) hosts classes, workshops, and events most weekdays, and the Military & Family Readiness Center runs the Relocation Assistance Program with a loan closet of household basics and car seats while your shipment is in transit. Once you are settled, look at the Wright-Patt COMPASS membership for a single card that unlocks the Wright-Patt Club, the golf courses, the Hobby Complex, and Kittyhawk Lanes: it is the fastest social on-ramp the base offers.

Housing questions

The Military Housing Office at (937) 257-6547 is the starting point, and on-base family housing is privatized and managed by The Properties at Wright Field, (937) 253-6009. Off base, Beavercreek and Fairborn are closest to the gates, 5 to 15 minutes, and I have written the full military relocation guide and a step-by-step PCS checklist covering neighborhoods, schools, and the first weeks.

How I Think About All of This

I have guided hundreds of military families through a PCS to Wright-Patterson, and I watch the base calendar and the base news for one simple reason: the families who settle fastest are not the ones who find the perfect house first, they are the ones who plug in early and start collecting people. A walk at Prairie Trace on a Thursday evening, the Wright Field anniversary with the Band of Flight, the Great Pumpkin Palooza at Turtle Pond, the Halloween Party at Wing's: each one is a short, genuinely effective way into the community, and I want my clients to use them all in their first month.

When I advise a military family on where to buy, I build a strategy around the commute to the gates, the school districts, the neighborhood feel, and what the years ahead in the Dayton area will hold. News like the COMPASS program, the new command team, and the base's medical upgrades are part of that picture too. If you have orders for WPAFB or you are already here and wondering about your housing options, call me. I will give you straight answers and a real plan for this move, starting wherever you are in the process.

"October on base goes quiet for nobody. A Thursday walk for breast cancer awareness at Prairie Trace, a Friday celebration of 99 years of Wright Field, a Saturday parade of planes in New Carlisle, and then pumpkins, horror movie night, and Halloween at Wing's: that is how a house turns into home. My job is to get you into the right neighborhood on the right timeline so you are here for the ones that follow."

October at a Glance
Pink Ribbon Walk Thursday, October 1, 5 to 7 p.m. Prairie Trace Golf Course

The base's annual breast cancer awareness walk, confirmed on the FSS calendar for Thursday, October 1. Free and family-friendly: wear pink, walk a short course at sunset, and stop at the awareness and info stations along the route. A low-pressure way to show up for the community in your first month.

99th Anniversary of Wright Field Friday, October 2, 4 to 7 p.m. Wright-Patterson AFB

A commemorative community evening marking 99 years since Wright Field was dedicated in 1927, with historians, base leadership, civic leaders, and a live performance by the Band of Flight. The kind of evening that quietly teaches a new family what the base stands for.

Heritage of Flight Festival & Parade of Planes Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4 Downtown New Carlisle

Restored aircraft roll down Main Street behind vintage tractors in the Parade of Planes on Saturday at 11 a.m., with a classic-car cruise-in Friday, a pancake breakfast, carnival rides, and food and craft vendors all weekend. A short drive from Fairborn and the gates, and for aviation families it feels like home.

Mini Moos & Brews Friday, October 16, 4 to 8 p.m. Wing's Bar & Grille, Area A

The mini highland cows return for an evening of free cookies and swag plus the FSS's twelve-dollar moo beer flights. A favorite on the base's fall calendar and a relaxed way to meet neighbors.

Great Pumpkin Palooza Thursday, October 22, 4 to 7 p.m. Turtle Pond

A free fall event with a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin bowling, mummy races, caricatures, a photo booth, and a DJ. If you arrive in October, this is your one-stop evening for meeting the community.

Retiree Appreciation Day & USO Day of the Deployed Friday, October 23 Wright-Patt Club & USO Center

Two meaningful gatherings share the day: Retiree Appreciation Day at the Wright-Patt Club connects retirees, veterans, and families with the 88th Medical Group, the Dayton VA, and DFAS, and the USO Center marks National Day of the Deployed with a family gathering honoring deployed service members.

Horror Movie Night Saturday, October 24 Wing's Bar & Grille, Area A

The Force Support fall entertainment lineup closes October with a horror movie night on base. Check wrightpattfss.com to confirm the film, rating, and start time before you load the kids in the car.

Halloween Party at Wing's Saturday, October 31, 3 to 8 p.m. Wing's Bar & Grille, Area A

The base's Halloween Party is back on the FSS calendar for Halloween itself: a haunted hallway, a costume contest, and an afternoon-to-evening window that works for families with little ones and adults alike.

October turns the base calendar
into a welcome mat.

The Pink Ribbon Walk on October 1, 99 years of Wright Field on October 2, the Parade of Planes in New Carlisle, then AFMC Family Day, Mini Moos, the Great Pumpkin Palooza, Horror Movie Night, and the Halloween Party at Wing's: every week in October has a reason to get out and meet people. I keep this page current all season, and when you are ready to turn the base into home, start the conversation with me.
