This Week in Dayton: Outdoor
Adventure at Eastwood, the
Parade of Planes & October.
By Jason White
Fresh for the week of September 28-October 4, 2026: the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience turns Eastwood MetroPark into a free weekend of climbing, paddling, and mountain biking, the Heritage of Flight Festival rolls its Parade of Planes down Main Street in New Carlisle, and October arrives in style with Halloweekend at Front Street, Tequila Fest at The Greene, the Centerville Fall Fest at Stubbs Park, and the Windmill Farm Market Spooktacular in Springboro. On the opening front, Ollie's Bargain Outlet just celebrated its grand opening in Riverside, and the build-outs keep moving at The Greene, the Mall at Fairfield Commons, and in the Oregon District.
The Oktoberfest weekend just wrapped at the Art Institute, the Mum Festival, and Old Timers Days, so this note shifts to the last days of September and the first full weekend of October. With cooler mornings, the fall festival machine kicks into high gear: a month-long scavenger hunt in Kettering starts Monday, pumpkin season opens at Lucas Brothers, and the biggest craft festivals of the year are two weeks out in Waynesville.
Here is everything fresh I have not covered before.
New Restaurants and Grand Openings
Ollie's Bargain Outlet Opens in Riverside
The biggest grand opening of the month landed on the eastern edge of Dayton: Ollie's Bargain Outlet welcomed shoppers Thursday, September 10 at 164 Woodman Drive in the former Big Lots space in the Airway Shopping Center, Riverside. Doorbuster deals marked the opening, and the store is open daily, which gives the Woodman corridor a fresh anchor for bargain hunters across Dayton, Beavercreek, and Fairborn. It is the kind of opening that quietly tells you a neighborhood is coming back to life.
Scramblers Building Out at The Greene
The Ohio-born breakfast chain Scramblers continues its build-out in the former Taste of Belgium space at 10 Greene Boulevard in Beavercreek. It will be the first Dayton-area location, and an opening date still has not been confirmed. The instant it lands, I will post it, because The Greene has quietly become one of the region's busiest restaurant row this year.
Black Rock Bar & Grill Still on the Way to Fairfield Commons
Black Rock Bar & Grill remains on the list for the front of the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek. The chain sears steaks and entrees tableside on hot volcanic rock, a cooking-at-your-table experience that would be new to the area. No opening date has been announced yet, and I will update this the moment there is news.
Whoa Dogs Finalizes Its Oregon District Lease
The Americana-style hot dog shop Whoa Dogs has closed its lease paperwork with the City of Dayton, which owns the building at 200 E. Fifth Street in the Oregon District. It is a step forward from the summer announcement, but an opening date has not been set. I will post it as soon as it is announced, because the Oregon District has been on a roll for new names this year.
Hummus & Garlic Prepares the Former So Pizza Space
The Michigan-based Mediterranean chain is readying the former So Pizza location at 2419 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Miami Township, near the Dayton Mall, as one of six Ohio locations it plans to open within the next year. The sign is up and the build-out is underway, with an exact opening date still to be announced.
The Parade of Planes in New Carlisle brings aviation heritage straight down Main Street, a favorite weekend for WPAFB families.
The Big Two: Eastwood and New Carlisle
Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience: October 3-4 at Eastwood MetroPark
Five Rivers MetroParks throws the region's biggest free outdoor festival of the fall at Eastwood MetroPark, 1385 Harshman Road, on Saturday and Sunday, October 3-4, and it draws tens of thousands of visitors every year. Saturday runs 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission and free parking. Two days of hands-on activities for every age and skill level: climbing walls, mountain biking, paddling, fishing, cycling, a recreation expo village, live entertainment, competitions, and a used-gear area where you can swap and shop outdoor equipment. Participants sign a waiver, and ridesharing and bikes are encouraged. It is the single best weekend of the fall to test-drive the Miami Valley's outdoor recreation for yourself.
Heritage of Flight Festival and the Parade of Planes: October 2-4
The Heritage of Flight Festival takes over downtown New Carlisle, a short drive from Fairborn and Wright-Patterson, for a full weekend. Friday runs 2-11 p.m. with carnival rides, games, food vendors, and a classic-car cruise-in. Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast, then the centerpiece: the Parade of Planes at 11 a.m., where restored aircraft roll down Main Street behind vintage tractors alongside floats, bands, and community groups. Horse-drawn carriage rides, a bike show, and plenty of small-town atmosphere round out Saturday, with Sunday events through the early afternoon. For WPAFB families, this one feels like home. Full details are on the festival's official site, heritageofflight.com.
Kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, and more: the Outdoor Experience at Eastwood is free all weekend.
The Suburb Sweep: Beavercreek, Centerville, Springboro, Kettering and Beyond
Tequila Fest at The Greene: October 2
The Miami Valley Restaurant Association hosts Tequila Fest Friday, October 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Greene in Beavercreek. Tickets are $25 for a 21-and-up evening of tacos, tequila flights, and a Ghost Tequila cocktail, all on the patio of the open-air center. It is a low-key, grown-up way to launch October before the big family events the next day.
Centerville Fall Fest at Stubbs Park: October 3
Centerville's free Fall Fest runs Saturday, October 3 from noon to 8 p.m. at Stubbs Park, 255 W. Spring Valley Pike, with food, crafts, live music, and family activities from the Heart of Centerville and Washington Township. It is part of the community lineup that made my mid-September guide, and it pairs perfectly with an afternoon of house hunting in the Centerville corridor.
Halloweekend at Front Street and the Spooktacular in Springboro
Halloween season officially starts on Friday, October 2. Halloweekend at Front Street kicks off the spooky calendar in Dayton's historic Front Street District that night, and the Windmill Farm Market Spooktacular Fall Festival brings its second edition to Springboro across October 2-4 with fall games, treats, and family fun among the pumpkins and mums.
Kettering's Creepy Crawl and a Preschool Halloween Stroll
For a month-long adventure, Kettering's Creepy Crawl Scavenger Hunt runs September 28 through October 30 for ages 18 and up, sending teams across downtown Kettering to collect clues and explore the city's shops and streets. And for the little ones, the Centerville-Washington Park District's Halloween Hop & Howl hosts a family-friendly early Halloween stroll on Thursday, October 1, a gentle, treat-filled start to the season.
Viking Weekend, Pumpkin Season, and the Rest of the Weekend
The Ohio Renaissance Festival in Waynesville goes Norse for Viking Weekend on October 3-4, with raiders and longship lore joining the full-contact jousting. My complete festival guide has every themed weekend mapped out. Meanwhile the Lucas Brothers Fall Festival in Bellbrook is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from September 25 through October 25, and Young's Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs runs Pick Your Own Pumpkins through October 25. Both are in my complete fall guide.
Beyond This Week: The Rest of October
Sauerkraut Festival, Vandalia Fall Fest and Xenia Fall Festival: October 10
The weekend of October 10 is the biggest of the fall. The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival takes over Historic Main Street in Waynesville October 10-11, one of the largest juried craft festivals in the Midwest with hundreds of crafters and food vendors. Same day, the Vandalia Fall Festival runs noon to 6 p.m. on the Stonequarry Road campus, and the Xenia Fall Festival fills downtown Xenia with harvest activities and community fun.
Fairborn Halloween Festival: October 16-18
Fairborn's Halloween Festival is the region's biggest Halloween street festival. It runs October 16-18 in downtown Fairborn with 80-plus food and craft vendors, carnival rides and games, a beer garden, live music, and the Spooktacular Costume Contest and Parade Friday night, with costume judging at 6 p.m. at the Fairborn YMCA and the parade at dusk down Central Avenue. A Zombie Walk and trick-or-treating at vendor booths round out Sunday. Free to attend, and the closest thing the suburbs have to a season-opening spooky weekend.
Boo Bash Trail and the Great Pumpkin Palooza
For families, mark October 17 for the Boo Bash Trail at Beavercreek's Dominick Lofino Park, a free, costume-friendly one-mile trail walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Then, on base, the Great Pumpkin Palooza returns to Wright-Patterson Thursday, October 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Turtle Pond, across from the Wright-Patt Club: a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, pumpkin bowling, trunk-or-treat, mummy races, a caricature artist, photo booth, and DJ. Last year drew roughly 1,500 people, so register early. More base events are in the Wright-Patterson guide.
Why I Track All of This
This is the week the Dayton area stops easing into fall and starts sprinting. A free outdoor fest drawing tens of thousands to Eastwood, a small town rolling airplanes down Main Street, a tequila night at The Greene, a festival in Centerville, a scavenger hunt in Kettering, and bargain-hunters lined up at a reopened anchor store in Riverside. Communities that fill their calendar like this are communities where families want to put down roots.
The openings tell the same story, even the quiet ones. A retail anchor fills a former Big Lots. A breakfast chain builds out at The Greene. A tableside-grill concept bets on Fairfield Commons. A hot dog shop closes its lease in the Oregon District. Every one of those is a business owner seeing the direction of our neighborhoods.
For buyers, this is the context that makes a community feel like home before you ever sign an offer. For sellers, it means your street sits inside a region people are choosing on purpose. And for anyone watching from another state, wondering whether Dayton is worth the move, this is the answer.
Whether you are buying, selling, or just curious about what your home might be worth, I am here with straight answers and a strategy that fits your situation.
"From a free weekend of paddling and climbing at Eastwood to the Parade of Planes in New Carlisle, this is the week our region's fall calendar comes alive, and I want my clients to feel as close to it as I do."
