This Week in Dayton: The
Sauerkraut Festival, Oktoberfest
Weekend & New Eats.
By Jason White
Fresh for the week of October 5-11, 2026: Saturday the 10th is the single biggest fall festival day of the year, with the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville, the Xenia Oktoberfest and Fall Festival, the Vandalia Fall Festival, and the 46th annual Enon Apple Butter Festival all on the calendar. During the week, The Notebook: The Musical opens at the Schuster Center, Mariachi Herencia de Mexico plays the Victoria Theatre, and Young's Jersey Dairy hosts its Pumpkin Sip and Paint Friday night. On the dining front, Toasted Brunch Bar and Cafe has opened its second location in Vandalia, while Scramblers, Black Rock Bar and Grill, Whoa Dogs, and Hummus and Garlic keep building out across Beavercreek, the Mall at Fairfield Commons, and the Oregon District.
Tipp City's Mum Festival just wrapped downtown, the Outdoor Experience at Eastwood and the Parade of Planes are behind us, and now the calendar turns to the weekend everyone around here plans around. With cooler mornings and peak color on the way, this is the week to get outside, get a brat on Main Street, and watch a small town stir apple butter over open flame.
Here is everything fresh I have not covered before.
New Restaurants and Grand Openings
Toasted Brunch Bar and Cafe: Second Location Now Open in Vandalia
The newest opening in the northern suburbs is Toasted Brunch Bar and Cafe, whose second location is now serving at 352 East National Road in Vandalia. The original near The Greene in Beavercreek has been packed since it opened on Valentine's Day, and the Vandalia spot is already showing up on Yelp's hot and new list for September 2026. Same creative brunch menu, same coffee program, and the same warm, family-friendly room, which is exactly what Vandalia diners have been asking for. If you have been meaning to try it, this is the week.
Scramblers and Black Rock Bar and Grill Build Out in Beavercreek
Two of Beavercreek's most-watched projects are still moving. Scramblers continues its build-out in the former Taste of Belgium space at 10 Greene Boulevard, the first Dayton-area location for the Ohio-born breakfast chain. And Black Rock Bar and Grill is still on the way to the front of the Mall at Fairfield Commons, where it will sear steaks tableside on hot volcanic rock. Neither has a confirmed opening date yet, and I will post the moment either one lands.
Whoa Dogs and Hummus and Garlic: The Tracker Continues
In the Oregon District, Whoa Dogs has finalized its lease with the City of Dayton for 200 E. Fifth Street, a real step forward, though no opening date is set. Near the Dayton Mall, Hummus and Garlic is preparing the former So Pizza space at 2419 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Miami Township as one of six Ohio locations the Michigan-based Mediterranean chain plans to open this year. Both are day-one announcements on my list: the minute dates are public, they go up here.
The Enon Apple Butter Festival stirs the kettles over wood fires the way it has for 46 years.
The Big Three: Sauerkraut, Xenia and Vandalia
Ohio Sauerkraut Festival: October 10-11 in Waynesville
The centerpiece of the entire fall is the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival, held the second full weekend of October on Historic Main Street in Waynesville. It runs Saturday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with free admission, roughly 460 craft vendors from 25-plus states, festival food, and entertainment on the stage both days. This is one of the largest juried craft festivals in the Midwest, and Main Street fills with everything from pottery to pumpkin decor. Go early, bring cash, park once, and plan to eat sauerkraut balls on the street. Full details are on the festival's official site, sauerkrautfestival.waynesvilleohio.com.
Xenia Oktoberfest and Fall Festival: October 10 Downtown
Downtown Xenia plays host to its annual Oktoberfest and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 10, with German music and food mixed with harvest activities and community fun along the Detroit Street corridor. It is the same weekend every year, and it is the perfect pairing with a day of house hunting in Greene County, where Xenia has become one of the region's best values for buyers. My late-September and October guide has the full Greene County lineup, including the Dayton Chocolate Festival at the Expo Center on October 17.
Vandalia Fall Festival: October 10 at the Recreation Center
The Vandalia Fall Festival runs Saturday, October 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Vandalia Recreation Center, 1111 Stonequarry Road, hosted by Vandalia Parks and Recreation. It is free, with live music, food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, and pumpkin painting for the kids. Vandalia has quietly built one of the friendliest small-city event calendars in the region, and this is the easy, low-pressure way to spend a cool fall afternoon close to home.
Waynesville's Main Street hosts the Sauerkraut Festival, one of the largest juried craft shows in the Midwest.
Midweek: The Schuster, the Victoria and Young's
The Notebook: The Musical at the Schuster Center: October 6-11
Broadway in Dayton brings The Notebook: The Musical to the Schuster Center for a six-day run from Tuesday, October 6 through Sunday, October 11. The stage adaptation of the beloved story pairs a gorgeous score with a story about memory and love that travels across a lifetime. It is a date-night anchor for the middle of the week, and if the fall is short, it is also the answer to what to do between the festival Saturday and everything after.
Mariachi Herencia de Mexico at the Victoria Theatre: October 9
The Grammy-nominated ensemble Mariachi Herencia de Mexico brings its La Nueva Generación Tour to the Victoria Theatre on Friday, October 9. With 14 musicians and a wall of brass and strings, it is one of the most talked-about touring mariachi shows in the country, and it makes for a joyful night right before the festival weekend. Tickets and details are at victoriatheatre.com.
Neil deGrasse Tyson and the Levitt UpClose Season
Two ways to spend an evening with ideas: Neil deGrasse Tyson speaks Sunday, October 4 at the Winsupply Theatre inside the Schuster Center, and the Levitt UpClose series opens its new season Wednesday, October 14, with a mystery artist performing at a secret, intimate location somewhere in the Dayton area. The ticketed UpClose shows sell out quickly once the lineup drops, so if you want in, watch the Levitt announcements this week.
The Suburb Sweep: Bellbrook, Kettering, Beavercreek and Springboro
Enon's Copper Kettles and Bellbrook's Corn Maze
The 46th annual Enon Apple Butter Festival fills downtown Enon on October 10-11, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, with apple butter stirred the old-fashioned way in copper kettles over wood fires, plus food vendors and crafts from the Enon Community Historical Society. Headed the other direction, Lucas Brothers Fall Festival keeps running in Bellbrook on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 25, with its corn maze, pumpkins, and wagon rides in full fall mode.
Kettering's Creepy Crawl and the Farm Market in Springboro
Kettering's month-long Creepy Crawl Scavenger Hunt continues through October 30, sending teams of all ages across downtown Kettering to collect clues and explore the city's shops and streets. In Springboro, Windmill Farm Market settles into full fall mode after its Spooktacular weekends, with pumpkins, mums, and seasonal produce ready for the porch. If you are out that way, the drive down Ohio 73 toward Waynesville is one of the prettiest fall routes in the region, and it lands you right at the Sauerkraut Festival.
The Greene and Fairfield Commons Keep Building
Beavercreek's two shopping anchors stay busy even in the build-out phase. The Greene is prepping Scramblers while its restaurant row keeps drawing crowds, and the Mall at Fairfield Commons has Black Rock Bar and Grill still on the way. Every project like this is a signal about the direction of the surrounding neighborhoods, and Beavercreek keeps collecting them.
Beyond This Week: Mid-October on the Horizon
Fairborn Halloween Festival: October 16-18
Fairborn's Halloween Festival is the region's biggest Halloween street festival, running October 16-18 in downtown Fairborn with 80-plus food and craft vendors, carnival rides, a beer garden, live music, and the Spooktacular Costume Contest and Parade on Friday night. It is free to attend and the closest thing the suburbs have to a full weekend of spooky fun. My last weekly guide has the full rundown.
Young's Jersey Dairy: Cars, Kettles and Haunted Rides
Young's keeps the fall going all month. The A Day at Young's Classic Car Show and Cruise-In lands Saturday, October 17 at 10 a.m., pick-your-own pumpkins run daily through October 25, and the Haunted Wagon Rides and Scary Stories pull out every Friday and Saturday night through October 31 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. There is also a Spooktacular Pumpkin Party on Friday, October 23. It is all in my complete fall guide.
The Chocolate Festival Comes to Xenia
One to put on the calendar now: the Dayton Chocolate Festival moves to the Greene County Expo Center in Xenia for its 2026 edition on Saturday, October 17, bringing the region's sweetest family day to the fairgrounds. Base families can pair it with the Great Pumpkin Palooza at Turtle Pond on October 22, covered in my Wright-Patterson guide.
Why I Track All of This
This is the weekend the fall calendar peaks: a Main Street in Waynesville lined with 460 craft vendors, a downtown Xenia full of German music and harvest fun, a free festival at the Vandalia Recreation Center, and copper kettles simmering over wood fires in Enon. Communities that fill their calendar like this are communities where families want to put down roots.
The dining news tells the same story. A brunch spot opens a second location in Vandalia. A breakfast chain builds out at The Greene. A tableside-grill concept bets on Fairfield Commons. Every one of those is a business owner seeing the direction of our neighborhoods.
For buyers, this is the context that makes a community feel like home before you ever sign an offer. For sellers, it means your street sits inside a region people are choosing on purpose. And for anyone watching from another state, wondering whether Dayton is worth the move, this is the answer.
Whether you are buying, selling, or just curious about what your home might be worth, I am here with straight answers and a strategy that fits your situation.
"From the copper kettles in Enon to the craft vendors on Main Street in Waynesville, this is the weekend our region's fall traditions come alive, and I want my clients to feel as close to it as I do."
